2010 ANNUAL
MEETING AND TEA
The Mayo Society Annual
afternoon Tea Party was held
on June 13, 2010 at The Clifton Club in Lakewood,
Ohio. It was by all accounts a classy and stylish affair. In
attendance were people from all walks of life. Northeast
Ohio was well represented and Westport and
Achill Island had
representation also. Amy Fadden and Maeve O’Grady from
Westport welcomed each
visitor with grace and youthful charm that is characteristic
of Mayo girls everywhere. It was the perfect venue for Brian
Coughlin who is writing a book on immigration from Achill to
Cleveland.
Kevin McGinty regaled us with his
adventures in the American army when he was a new immigrant.
He spoke of the opportunities afforded to all of us and how
important it is for us to remember the veterans who gave so
much so we could live in comfort. He described the Peace
Memorial in Castlebar Co. Mayo that stands as a tribute to
all the Irish who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom
throughout the world. The Mayo Society will make a donation
to the memorial this year.
Kevin O'Donnell
is this year's "Mayo Person of The Year." He is the former
CEO of Sifo Industries. He also served as Director of The
Peace Corps. Mr.
O'Donnell's impressive resume will be featured in the next
newsletter and also in the Mayo Ball Program Book. He spoke
briefly and proudly of his Mayo heritage. We look forward to
presenting him with the Mayo Crystal Bowl at the Ball on
October 2, 2010.
A special thank you to Frank
Conway, son of Manus and Bridgie Conway for making The
Clifton Club available. We are fortunate to have an
extraordinary dedicated and talented committee under the
direction of Marianne Kinkoph. (See photos for names of the
committee). The entertainment was provided by Madeline and
Celia Hiros, eleven and nine years of age. Dancers Cailin
Kline Quinn, Corrigan, and Megan Medley from The Brady
Campbell Dance School performed their intricate steps
flawlessly. A very special Thank You to all who baked
soda bread, pastries and
pies. We hope that all who attended will be back for the
2011 Tea. Check our website for
details.
